James Wainana Macharia, born in 1959 is the current Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure in Kenya and a well-known accountant. Macharia was nominated to head the Transport sector by H.E Uhuru Kenyatta in November 2015. Before taking the Transport docket he was serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Health, at the time of his appointment he was appointed to serve as an acting CS heading the transport sector after the then CS Michael Kamai was suspended in March 2015, and served for nine months before taking full responsibility of the Ministry in November 2015. Being one f the best accountant in Kenya, Macharia is Certified Public Accountant.

As the Cabinet secretary, he has managed to negotiate several multi-billion deals in the Transport sector, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development. In addition, he has also spearheaded the launch of several multi-billion infrastructure projects in Kenya.  Moreover, Macharia is the one overseeing the biggest and modern Express  Way in Nairobi that will cost around 64 billion.

Career

hr began his accounting career in 1989 working for Standard Chartered bank, five years later he was promoted to a rank of Financial Controller in 1994. Macharia then moved to Zambia where he served as a Managing Director for African Banking Corporation. After that, he moved to Tanzania where he also served as the Managing Director.  In 2005, Macharia became the Group Managing Director at NIC Bank serving for only eight years until 2013. During his tenure as the managing director, the bank grew to an extent of having five subsidiary companies including in Tanzania and Uganda.

Serving as a Cabinet Secretary

He was nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for the first time in 2013, when H.E Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him to head the Ministry of Health, in that capacity he served for two years until 2015. In 2015, he was appointed to serve as an acting CS for the Ministry of Transport after the suspension of Michael Kamau in March 2015.  In November 2015 he was appointed officially to head the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure by H.E Uhuru Kenyatta to serve under his administration. Macharia has been performing excellently in that sector and that is the reason he has maintained the seat since 2015 to date.

As the Cabinet Secretary he spearheaded the construction of Standard Gauge Railway, a multi-billion railway that runs from Nairobi to Mombasa, the project was complete during the president’s first term. in addition, he has also supervised the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which will articulate the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and James Gichuru Raod in Westlands. Over the last 6 years under his leadership, the government has archived a lot in the Transport and Infrastructure sector.
