Cleophas Malala (Cleophas Wakhugu Malala) is an outspoken Kenyan politician serving as a Senator for Kakamega County. On top of that, he is a well-known playwright.

Malala will be serving as Senator until August 2022 when another aspirant will take over since he is not seeking re-election for the same position in the upcoming elections. At the moment Malala is on the rise to clinch the county’s top job.

Malala’s political career has been on the rise since 2013, coming all the way from an MCA in 2013 to a Senator in 2017 and now a gubernatorial aspirant.

He is a member of the ANC party which is headed by Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, a co-principle at Kenya Kwanza Alliance headed by the Deputy President. Being a vocal leader, Malala is always in the limelight with different scandals.

The strict politician is a proud dad and a loving husband, he is married to a gorgeous lady by the name of Carolyne Ayietsa. The two love birds got married way back in 2018 officiating their union in a traditional wedding.

Before joining politics in 2013, Malala was serving as a high school teacher and playwright, winning an award in playwright. In 2003 he directed and scripted Shackles of Doom, the play was a little bit overboard landing Butere girls in trouble.

In 2013, Malala decided to leave his teaching career and curve his political path vying for an MCA seat in Mahiakalo Ward in Kakamega. He managed to secure the seat and served for five years under which he cemented his name in the political field.

By 2017, he had extended his popularity from his ward to the entire county. During the 2017, election Malala was not ready to go back to the County Assembly instead he wanted to make his way to the Senate.

After a tough battle, he managed to defeat the famous bullfighter and a long-time legislature, Bonny Khalwale. Following his victory in the senatorial seat, Malala said the victory of the seat as a result of his good work as an MCA.

As Senator, Malala has been able to achieve so much but some of the notable things he did include;

  • Leading the G40 group that nurtures upcoming thespians and inspires them to script well.
  • He pushed for Legislation, supporting Oparanya’s Care Program
  • In 2018, he headed to court after KNEC canceled the results of several schools including Chebuyusi Secondary and he ended up winning the case.

In 2017, ANC was under the NASA coalition and when he made it to the senate he was appointed to deputies James Orengo as a minority leader after the withdrawal of Moses Wetangula.

Following a successful term as a senator Malala has is now aiming at the gubernatorial seat in the upcoming election. He is running on an ANC party ticket, Malala was competing for the same seat with Bonny Khalwale but they had a discussion and Khalwale accepted to step down and run as the Senator.

Away from politics, he has a huge fan of football and he likes to support young players with talents. In 2018, he began the Cleo Malala Super Cup a tournament he sponsors every December.
