MP Shah is one of the biggest private hospitals in Kenya which is aimed at providing better, quality, and affordable health care to the community. The hospital has existed for over 83 years making it one of the oldest hospitals in Kenya.

For the eight decades it has been in operation it has been under Social Service League Hospitals which operates as a none profit organization.

Being one of the best, the hospital boasts a capacity of 210 fully operational beds, 12 chemotherapy units,  30 operational critical care beds, and 10 renal dialysis units. On top of that, the hospital has hired some of the best specialists in the world and they have been ranked one of the best hospitals in the country.

The hospital is based in Parklands, Nairobi few metres from Parkland police. In this article, we tell the story of who founded the MP Shah Hospital, we tell more about his family which is currently running the hospital.

The giant medical center was founded in the early 1930s by an eminent philanthropist Meghji Pethraj Shah. Initially, the hospital was named Parkland Nursing Home, at the time the founder had the vision of making the ill and suffering feel and experience quality care.

The venture grew with time and from a nursing home, it became a fully-fledged facility changing from Parkland Nursing Home to M.P Shah Hospital. MP Shah was derived from Meghji Pethraj Shah which is the full name of the founder. 83 years down the line, the hospital has grown to a multi-million empire operating in a technology mode and covering all sectors of medicine.

Meghji Pethraj Shah and Family

The late Meghaji Pethraj Shah well known as MP Shah was a Gujarat and Kenyan businessman who made an impact in the world of business during his era. The man from Gujarat left his country India in 1919 at the age of 15 and came to Mombasa Kenya.

When he arrived at the country he landed a job as a shop attendant and worked for 3 years before, he moved to Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. Following his move, he never went for employment instead he began his first business, Raichand Brothers. The company was involved in retailing and wholesaling.

The business went well for him and by the time he was hitting 35 years he was already a tycoon operating over 50 companies under the Meghraj Group which he has founded. His businesses were distributed in and out of East Africa as he had other companies in Indian and UK. Most of his companies were involved in manufacturing, trading, distribution as well as finance.

Unlike most of entrepreneurs, MP Shah retired from active business at the age of 49 in 1954. At this time he was among the wealthiest individuals in Africa. Following his retirement from active business, he never retired from his philanthropist as he went on and did an impressive job helping the needy in the best wa knew how.

MP Shah moved to London in 1957 and died in 1964 at the age of 59 years. MP Shah was among the empires he left his family to run. Currently, his family runs the hospital but as for the other businesses he had already sold shares.

The Shah family is among the wealthiest family in Kenya with an estimated net worth of Ksh 6 billion.
