Salim Mvurya is a Kenyan Politician who was nominated as cabinet secretary in the ministry of mining and blue economy by President Willian Ruto. He was previously serving as the first governor of Kwale County after winning the 2013 general elections.

He ran on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket before switching to the Jubilee Party of Kenya. On August 30, 2017, it was announced that he would be named Chairman of Kenya’s Council of Governors. Unfortunately, he was unable to do so; instead, governor Wycliffe Oparanya succeeded Nanok.

Salim Mvurya was born on January 1 1970 at Kadzandani Village, Kinango District of Kwale County.

Salim Mvurya Education

In 1979, he attended Mavirivirini Primary School, and from 1987 to 1990, he attended Mpeketoni Secondary School. He then attended Egerton University for his first degree, earning a Bachelor of Agri-Business Management in 1996.

He graduated with honors from the Institute of Development Studies in England, UK, with a master’s degree in Participation, Power, and Social Change. He also holds NGO management certificates from MS-TCDC in Arusha, Tanzania.

Salim Mvurya Career

Mvurya has 17 years of experience in leadership and social development. He was chosen to serve as Plan Kenya’s acting country director in the year 2008. He has also worked for the Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development  (an institute of Egerton University) and the Aga Khan Foundation.

He received funding for some of his programs from DFID, USAID, the foreign ministries of the Netherlands and Finland, as well as NORAD in Norway.
