Rebecca Miano is a Kenyan attorney and a member of the Law Society of Kenya. Currently, she is serving as the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of East African Community, ASALS & Regional Development. She took over from Moses Kuria who has been having a rough time since his appointment.

Prior to her current appointment, she served as the Chief Executive Officer and managing director of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

Heading KenGen, Rebecca became the first woman in the history of Kenya to head the organization since it was founded and one of the two women to head parastatal in Kenya. Moreover, Miano is among the few powerful women in Kenya holding such senior positions in the government with outstanding performance.

Miano joined KenGen in 1998 as a senior legal officer. Since then she has been rising in ranks until she was declared as the new CEO and MD of KenGen on 1st November 2017, a position she held until her rise to Ministerial position in October 2023.

Much is not known about her net worth but being a CEO heading one of the biggest and most profitable parastatals in Kenya she must be earning a substantial monthly salary of over 300k.

Career

Miano began her career soon after graduating, landing a job at Musyoka Annan & Company Advocates, a law firm situated in Nairobi. She then relocated to Australia where she completed her studies and later landed a job at Slater and Gordon, a law firm in Queensland, Australia.

In 1998, she decided to come back to Kenya after being away for a while. After her comeback, she was hired by KenGen, the largest power producer in East Africa as a senior legal officer.

At KenGen, her hard work and determination earned her a promotion to become assistant company secretary. In 2008, she rose to rank becoming the company secretary and director of legal affairs, a position she held until November 2017.

In August 2017, the former CEO and Managing Director Albert Mugo attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years, leaving the docket empty. Miano was then appointed by the board of directors to serve as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in an acting capacity.

She served in the acting capacity for 3 months and the vacancy was advertised attracting 90 applicants who were shortlisted for the position. Miano was among the candidates who applied for the position.

Having worked with the company for over 15 years at that time she was able to defeat the other candidates and emerged as the best fit for the position. On November 1st, 2017, KenGen confirmed her appointment becoming the first female CEO and Managing Director of KenGen.

Moreover, she is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretary of Kenya. She was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya in 2010 in recognition of her good work. She is among the two female CEO leading parastatals in Kenya alongside Mary Jane Mwangi.

Following her tremendous performance at KenGen, the current President, William Samoei Ruto has seen it feet to reward her hard work. On the 4th of October 2023, Miano was confirmed as the Cabinet Secretary of Trade and Industry. Miano took the helm from Moses Kuria who was moved to the Ministry of Public Service.

When she is off duty, Miano loves cooking and working out. According to Miano, her mother really loved cooking and whenever she was free she traveled upcountry just to cook for her family.
