Kanga School located in Rongo, Migori County was founded in 1985 by the late Hezekiah Oyugi, a prominent Internal Security Permanent Secretary. The first students to be admitted to the school were placed in St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rapogi as the school structure was yet to be completed.

In 1989, the school was ready and Oyugi who was also the founder donated the school’s first minibus. However, it wasn’t that good looking so students nick-named it ‘matchbox’.

The students preferred trekking while heading to other schools, especially to neighboring girls’ schools rather than being seen disembarking from an old minibus.

Their first principal Mr. Joram Ayoo was poached from Starehe Boys and his presence in the school brought discipline and production to students. In 1988, the school was ranked sixth country in the then Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) examinations.

Since then, the school has maintained the tradition of good grades year after another. The School has also produced great men in society including Dr Allan Ochanji of the Univesity of Nairobi, Eddy Anayo, a regional politician, and many more gents doing great things in society.
