Asumbi Girls High School History

Asumbi Girls was established on March 19th, 1936 by the Franciscan Missionary Sister of Joseph, starting as a lower primary school under the sponsorship of Mill Hill Missionaries of the Catholic Diocese of Kisumu.

In 1965 the school grew and it launched its first secondary school students, which led to the ouster of primary school three years later in 1968.  Since then the school has grown to become one of the biggest schools in Kenya sitting on a 20-acre piece of land in Homa Bay County.

The girls in blue uniforms decided to go with a clean-shave, unlike other schools where they braid their hair. Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga is among the iron ladies who were guided by the school motto “Integrity.”

Despite being known as the top-performing school, Asumbi is also known for using one of the pioneer Principal’s human skeletons in the science lab. This is the only secondary school that uses human skeletons in the science lab.
