Ayub Savula undertook a Journalism diploma program at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication in 2001. He worked as a regional news editor for Standard Media Group Limited from 1998 and 2007. He would eventually become the Managing Director of Cross-Continental Venture Limited before embarking on his entrepreneurial path and founded Express Media Group, which he still leads today.

He also controlled Sunday Publishers, a company that made headlines in 2021 due to four years of unpaid taxes totaling Ksh 473,000,000. In his defense, Ayub sought Ksh 3,000,000 in security but was denied by the court, which stated, “In any case, I find that the security of Ksh3 million proposed by the appellant (Savula) is insufficient and too low given the tax liability at stake.”

On December 31, 2021, he announced ditching the One Kenya Alliance movement, and joining Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja. At the highly publicized ceremony, he and four other MPs and eleven MCAs changed gears.
