List of Private Universities in Kenya, Nicknames and Location

Here, you will find a list of all private universities in Kenya, but first, let us ask ourselves a few questions…

What is a University?

A University is a higher learning institution that provides facilities for teaching and research and is authorized to grant academic degrees in Undergraduate Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctoral programs.

During the 20th Century days, acquiring a university education was considered as riding the goat. University education was meant for very few intellectual people who were respected in society and given the first priority in almost all aspects of life.

However, towards the end of the century and the beginning of the 21st century, university education took a revolution and the status quo was changed.

How were Private Universities Introduced?

Initially, universities were mostly established and run by the government, but with the new revolution, private universities started trooping in, and soon almost every aspiring student had a chance to join a university. This was regardless of whether they had attained the minimum grade required by the government or not.

Private universities would set a lower mean grade than public universities and would accommodate the backlog of students filtered out from government sponsorship.

Today, Kenya has over 30 chartered public universities, 30 private chartered universities, and 30 universities with a letter of interim Authority (LLA).
